"박현주의 혜안 빛났다"...미래에셋증권, 글로벌 금융리더 성장 '길잡이'

미래에셋그룹 창업주 박현주 회장은 국내 증권시장의 수준을 선진화된 시장으로 변화를 주도한 입지전적 인물로 꼽힌다.

특히, 탁월한 혜안으로 해외 진출 전략을 일관되게 추진하면서 미래에셋증권이 지금의 글로벌 Top tier 투자은행(IB)으로 도약하는데 결정적인 역할을 주도했다.
19일 미래에셋증권에 따르면, 미래에셋그룹은 지난 2003년 자산운용사 홍콩 진출을 시작으로 이듬해 미래에셋증권이 자기자본 500만달러를 들여 홍콩법인을 설립했다. 이후 20년만에 약 34억 달러(약 4.5조원)를 넘어서며 약 600배 성장을 이루어 냈다.

2023년 말 기준 미래에셋증권은 현지 해외법인 12개, 사무소 3개를 운영하며 해외 진출에 성공한 국내 14개 증권사 가운데 가장 많은 해외 네트워크를 보유 중이다. 글로벌 네트워크의 유기적 성장과 인수합병(M&A), 선 운용사 후 증권사 진출 전략을 기본으로 꾸준히 수익 다각화를 추진했던 미래에셋증권의 뚝심이 빛을 발했다는 평가다.
지난해 글로벌 사업 강화를 위해 미래에셋증권은 강력한 조직개편을 단행한 바 있다. 홍콩법인 CEO 이정호 부회장을 글로벌 사업 총괄 부회장으로 선임하여 글로벌 비즈니스 강화하고 미래에셋 그룹에서 중점을 두고 있는 인도 뿐만 아니라 글로벌 전체 비즈니스에 있어 중요한 역할을 맡게 되었다.

이처럼 글로벌 사업을 강조하는 박현주 회장은 "한국 기업은 해외경영을 통해 국부를 창출하고, 과감한 해외시장 진출을 통한 인수합병을 통해 글로벌 시장에 들어가야 한다" 고 말하며 20년 동안 꾸준하게 글로벌 사업을 성장시키고 있다.

이는 고객들에게 우량 글로벌자산을 소개하는 역량으로도 나타났다.

미래에셋증권은 최근 해외주식 양도소득세 신고기준 2023년 고객들이 해외주식을 통해 1조원이 넘는 수익을 올렸다고 밝힌 바 있다. 2020년부터 누적된 수익은 총 4조5000억원이 넘는다.

확정된 수익 외에도 현재 보유중인 상위 10개 종목의 평가차익이 4조원대를 넘어서고 있어 해외주식 투자를 통한 양도차익은 더욱 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.

결과적으로 해외주식을 통한 국부창출 및 고객수익률 제고라는 두마리 토끼를 모두 잡은 것이라 할 수 있다.

이외에도 미래에셋증권은 지난 해 국내 금융업계 최초로 인도시장에서 유의미한 인수합병을 진행해 업계에 신선한 충격을 줬다.

현지 증권사 Sharekhan Limited를 인수해 글로벌 사업을 통한 새로운 도약을 준비한 것이다. 2018년 국내 증권사 최초로 인도 자본시장에 진출한데 이어, 5년만에 국내 최초로 현지 기업을 인수한 것이다.

2000년 설립된 Sharekhan Limited는 총 임직원수 3500여명,총계좌 약 300만 계좌, 현지 업계 10위 수준의 증권사로 인도 전역 400개 지역, 130여개 지점 및 4000명 이상의 비즈니스 파트너(외부 전문 투자 네트워크)보유하고 있다. 미래에셋자산운용 인도법인과 함께 그룹차원에서 비즈니스 시너지를 극대화하여 4년 안에 인도 5위 내의 증권사를 만들 계획이다.

이번 인수합병으로 미래에셋증권은 글로벌 비즈니스를 통해 여타 금융사와 차별화된 성장을 이룰 것이라는 기대를 가지고 있으며,적극적인 투자가 성장으로 이어지고 성장은 다시 성과로 이어지는 선순환 구조가 만들어졌다는 평가다.

최근 업계에 따르면, 박 회장은 국제경영 분야에서 세계적 권위를 가진 국제경영학회(AIB·Academy of International Business)에서 '올해의 국제 최고경영자상(International Executive of the Year Award)' 수상자로 선정됐다.

AIB는 세계 저명학자 및 전문가로 구성된 국제경영 분야 학회로, 1959년 미국 미시간에서 설립됐다. 현재 세계 90여개국에서 3천400여명의 회원이 가입해 있으며, 국제경영 분야 관련 연구와 교육, 정책 수립을 비롯해 국가 간 학술 교류와 세미나 등 활동을 벌이고 있다.

수상자 선정 이유로는 박 회장이 미래에셋그룹을 세계적인 수준의 투자은행(IB)으로 발전시킨 리더십을 인정받았기 때문으로 풀이된다.

주목할 만한 것은 우리나라 기업인으로서 이 상을 수상한 건 역대 두 번째라는 점이다. 과거 1995년 고 최종현 SK그룹 선대회장의 수상 이후 28년 만이다. 박 회장은 다음달 3일 열리는 개회식에서 기조연설도 할 예정이다.

한편, AIB는 오는 7월 2~6일 서울 롯데호텔에서 'AIB 2024 서울'을 개최한다.

As of the end of 2023, Mirae Asset Securities operates 12 overseas subsidiaries and 3 offices, boasting the largest overseas network among the 14 domestic securities companies that have successfully expanded abroad. The company's persistent efforts in organic growth of its global network, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and a strategy of first establishing asset management firms followed by securities firms, have been credited for its diversified revenue streams.

Last year, to strengthen its global business, Mirae Asset Securities underwent a major organizational restructuring. Lee Jeong-ho, CEO of the Hong Kong subsidiary, was appointed as Vice Chairman overseeing global business. This move aimed to bolster global operations, particularly in India and other key markets worldwide.

Chairman Park Hyeon-joo's emphasis on global business is evident in his consistent strategy over the past 20 years. He has stated, "Korean companies must create national wealth through overseas management and enter global markets through bold acquisitions."

This strategy has also translated into the company's ability to offer high-quality global assets to its customers. Mirae Asset Securities recently reported that its customers earned over 1 trillion KRW in profits from overseas stock investments in 2023 alone, with cumulative profits exceeding 4.5 trillion KRW since 2020. Additionally, the valuation gains on the top 10 holdings currently exceed 4 trillion KRW, indicating further potential for gains from overseas stock investments.

The company's achievements highlight its success in enhancing national wealth and improving customer returns through international stock investments.

Moreover, Mirae Asset Securities made headlines last year by conducting a significant acquisition in the Indian market, a first for the domestic financial industry. The company acquired Sharekhan Limited, positioning itself for a new leap forward through global business expansion. Mirae Asset Securities was the first Korean brokerage firm to enter the Indian capital market in 2018, and within five years, it became the first to acquire a local company.

Founded in 2000, Sharekhan Limited has over 3,500 employees, approximately 3 million accounts, and is among the top 10 securities firms in India. It operates in 400 regions across India with 130 branches and more than 4,000 business partners. Mirae Asset plans to leverage synergies with its Indian subsidiary to elevate Sharekhan into the top 5 securities firms in India within four years.

This acquisition is expected to differentiate Mirae Asset Securities from other financial firms through global business growth, creating a virtuous cycle of investment leading to growth, which in turn leads to performance.

Recently, Chairman Park was selected as the recipient of the 'International Executive of the Year Award' by the Academy of International Business (AIB), a prestigious recognition in the field of international management. AIB, founded in 1959 in Michigan, USA, comprises renowned scholars and experts in international business and has over 3,400 members from more than 90 countries.

Chairman Park was recognized for his leadership in developing Mirae Asset Group into a world-class investment bank. Notably, he is only the second Korean business leader to receive this award, following the late Chairman Chey Jong-hyun of SK Group in 1995, 28 years ago. Park is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the opening ceremony on July 3rd.

Meanwhile, AIB will hold 'AIB 2024 Seoul' at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul from July 2nd to 6th.
