[기업분석] 텔레그램 (Telegram) 활성사용자 2억명… 러시아 두로프 2013년 창업, 페이스북 도전

안희정 지사가 텔레그램을 통해 김지은 정무비서와 주고받은 메시지가 공개되면서 텔레그램에 대한 관심이 크게 높아졌다.
텔레그램은 광고가 없는 오픈베이스의 메신저다. 러시아 최대 사회관계망서비스(SNS)인 ‘브이깐딱쩨(ВКонтакте)를 설립한 니콜라이 두로프(Nikolai Durov)와 파벨 두로프(Pavel Durov) 형제가 개발한 것이다. ‘브이깐딱쩨는 러시아에서 VK로 통한다. 2013년 발족했다. 지금은 독일 텔레그램 메신저 LLP사가 개발과 운영을 맡고 있다.

텔레그램은 2013년 아이폰용으로 첫선을 보였다. 그해 말 안드로이드 버전도 공개했다. 2014년 왓츠앱이 통신장애 사고를 내면서 텔레그램으로 가입자들이 몰렸다.

텔레그램의 월간 활성 사용자 즉 Monthly Active Users(MAU)는 2억명을 넘어섰다. 텔레그램으로 오가는 메시지 수만도 하루 250억개에 이른다. 텔레그램은 그 어떤 사용료도 받지 않는다. 처음부터 끝까지 비영리이다.

텔레그램을 만든 두로프 형제는 지금도 브이깐딱쩨(ВКонтакте)를 운영하고 있다. 이 VK는 흔히 러시아의 페이스북으로 불린다.

VK는 사용자가 4억명에 이르는 SNS다. 러시아와 인근 우크라이나, 아제르바이잔 등 러시아권에서 인기가 높다.

두로프 형제는 텔레그램을 운영하는데 필요한 모든 자금을 댄다. 텔레그램의 보안과 암호화 기술도 두 형제가 관장하고 있다. 텔레그램에 쓰이는 프로토콜 MT 프로토(MTProto)도 두러프 형제가 직접 개발했다.
이 두 형제는 앞으로도 텔레그램으로 돈을 벌 생각이 없다고 말하고 있다. 다른 기업에 판매할 계획도 없으며 오로지 고객의 메신저 전달에만 주력하겠다고 밝힌다. 두 형제는 만약 텔레그램 자본이 모두 소진되면 사용자에게 기부를 부탁할 계획이다.

무료 메신저라고 해서 텔레그램의 성능이 다른 메신저와 비교해 뒤떨어지는 것은 아니다. 텔레그램은 아이폰과 안드로이드폰, 윈도폰, 윈도PC, 맥, 리눅스, 웹브라우저 등 다양한 환경을 지원한다.

텔레그램은 최근 프로토콜과 API, 아이폰과 안드로이드 앱 등의 서비스 소스코드를 공개했다. 텔레그램 자체 개발을 원하는 개발자는 공개된 텔레그램 API를 이용해 구미에 맞게 텔레그램 서비스를 개발할 수 있도록 한 것이다.

한국에서는 2014년 박근혜 정부 당시 정권이 카카오톡 등을 대상으로 인터넷을 감청한 것으로 드러나면서 많은 사람들이 텔레그램으로 사이버 망명을 했다. 이후 텔레그램은 인터넷 언론 자유를 상징하는 존재가 되었다.

텔레그램은 문자나 사진, 문서 등을 암호화해서 전송할 수 있다. 암호화를 중시하고 대화 내용의 흔적이 남지 않는다.
