아마존 배터리 잇단 발화사고, 미국 소비자안전위 (CPSC) 사용중단 명령

[글로벌이코노믹 연구소 김대호 소장/ 경제학 박사] 아마존 배터리 충전기에서 불이 붙는 발화사고가 속출하고 있다.

미국 소비자제품안전위원회 CPSC는 14일 아마존이 자체 브랜드 즉 PB 방식으로 만들어 판매해온 휴대용 배터리 충전기가 과열, 발화해 화재나 화상을 일으키고 있다면서 아마준 배터리 충전기 사용을 즉각 증단하라고 촉구했다 .
이에 따라 아마존은 자체 브랜드(PB)로 판매한 휴대용 배터리 충전기 26만대를 전량 리콜하기로 했다.

리콜대상은 자체 브랜드인 아마존 베이직(Amazon Basics) 이름으로 판매한 리튬이온 배터리 충전기 6종이다. 이 제품의 제조업체는 중국 궈광 일렉트릭이다.

이 제품들은 2014년 12월부터 2017년 7월까지 아마존 홈페이지와 아마존 북스토어를 통해 팔려 나갔다. 대당 가격은 최저 9달러, 최대 40달러였다.

이번 사고로 최우량품만을 만들어 판매한다는 아마존 PB 제품의 신뢰도에 적지 않은 상처가 날 것으로 보인다.

소비자제품안전위원회는 불량 상품이나 불량 제품으로 인한 소비자의 상해와 사망 위험을 줄임으로써 미국민의 가족 안전을 유지하는 데 도움울 주기 위해 만들어진 독립적인 연방 규제 기관이다. 영어 약자로 CPSC로 부른다.

미국은 1972년 소비자제품안전법을 마련했다. 이번에 만들어진 기구다.
